tutus for sean
Sean Korpal is currently a junior at L'Anse Creuse High School. He is the captain and goalie of the L'Anse Creuse High School Hockey Team, and was named the Defensive MVP for the 2013-2014 season. Sean also maintains a 4.0 in his classes, and earned a composite score of 30 on the ACT. Sean was recently diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphocytic) B-cell Leukemia. With about 6,000 people diagnosed annually in the United States, it is the most common type of cancer in children. Fortunately, ALL has an 85% curability rate in children. However, ALL is an aggressive form of cancer that requires intensive (and costly) chemotherapy.
In 2008, his mother (Kristine) survived a battle with breast cancer. On the night of her surgery, Sean had his entire hockey team tape their sticks pink in her honor. As the goalie in net that night, Sean earned a shutout game for his mom. "I have the puck from that game in a special casing next to my bed to this day", says Kristine. "He gave me pep talks when the side effects from the meds got worse... now I'm here for his fight against cancer".
Sean is very active with local events, and often participates in charity fundraisers such as Relay for Life. He strives to give to his community, and now it's our turn to give back. Sean's treatment will be a long and expensive journey for both him and his family. Children's Special Health Care Insurance (recommended by the family's social worker) is $3,000 a year. Additionally, each round trip from the Korpal's home to the hospital and back is almost 50 miles (trips that have to be taken at least two times a week). Therefore, Team Tutu is currently working to raise funds to help with any expenses associated with Sean's medical treatment. All donations received will be given directly to the Korpal family. Every penny counts!
